Our Experts

Heather Shalayko

Owner, HHP, CWP, CLC

Heather Shalayko is a Holistic Health Practitioner, Certified Wellness Practitioner, and Certified Lactation Counselor. Heather has a Bachelors of Science in Wellness, Health Promotion, and Injury Prevention from Oakland University and she is currently completing her Masters Degree.  Heather has worked in the health and wellness field for over 12 years in the community, government, institutional, private and non-profit sectors.  Heather is a mom to two beautiful girls and loves the outdoors. Heather and her husband Steve both grew up and graduated from Oxford High School and she is so happy to be back here, as a small business owner.

Heather is looking forward to bringing her experience teaching mindfulness, nutrition, and various physical activity programs to the Simple Organics community. One of her favorite programs she teaches is Cooking with Kids, a family based nutrition program. “I have found that when families learn together, they’re much more likely to make those healthy behavior changes and be successful together.” Heather wants Simple to continue to be a staple for health and wellness in the community and move toward an overall wellness center. Simple Organics will have biweekly breastfeeding hours starting in October where new moms and expecting moms can come in, sip on some tea, and get breastfeeding support for free. When Heather had her two daughters she struggled to find breastfeeding support. Heather wants to change that and support new moms to successfully breastfeed for as long as they want to!

Cordyceps – An Amazing Adaptogen

Cordyceps is a major adaptogen, meaning that it helps you deal with stress, tension, and fatigue. Herbalists believe that its nutrients promote the body’s natural balance and support already healthy liver function, respiration, and inflammatory processes. For these reasons, holistic health systems say it promotes longevity, and enhances energy, vigor, stamina, and libido.

The Cordyceps that was wildcrafted in the ancient past was the species called “sinensis.” Because its rarity has raised concerns of it becoming an endangered species, it seldom finds its way into the United States. Today, some companies claim to have spores of the original species, but the products they make from it are mycelium grown on grain.

In recent years, Cordyceps militaris has taken center stage. The nutritional profiles of militaris and sinensis are similar enough that practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine consider them interchangeable. Militaris mushrooms are rich in both Beta-D-glucans and Cordycepin, a factor thought to be responsible for many of Cordyceps’ special benefits.
