Heather Shalayko

Owner

HHP, CWP, CLC, Herbalist, Holistic Nutritionist, MPH, PhD Candidate

Heather Shalayko is not only a dedicated Holistic Health Practitioner, Holistic Nutritionist, Certified Wellness Practitioner, and Certified Lactation Counselor but also a passionate advocate for holistic well-being and ancestral herbal wisdom. Her multifaceted journey is enriched by her love for gardening, canning, baking, and gluten-free cooking.

Heather is on a continuous academic journey that reflects her unwavering commitment to holistic well-being. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Wellness, Health Promotion, and Injury Prevention from Oakland University, studied at U of M for her Master of Public Health, and Completed a Holistic Nutrition and Master Herbalist program which laid the foundation for her holistic approach to health. Currently, she’s diligently working towards her PhD in Naturopathy, further deepening her expertise in natural healing and wellness practices and plans to graduate this winter.

With a deep commitment to ancestral herbal practices, holistic well-being, and her ongoing education, Heather is dedicated to empowering individuals and families to lead healthier lives and reconnect with the wisdom of our ancestors.

About Heather

Beyond her academic pursuits, Heather’s heart lies in her garden, where she nurtures and grows a vibrant array of herbs and plants. Her green thumb extends to her passion for canning, preserving the flavors of each season’s bounty. In her kitchen, she’s known for her artistry in baking and gluten-free cooking, crafting nourishing meals that delight the senses.

Heather’s commitment to holistic wellness is deeply personal. She specializes in autoimmune disorders such as celiac disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, having achieved remission through a rigorous combination of dietary modifications and herbal support. Her journey towards healing has not only informed her practice but also fuels her dedication to guiding others on their paths to wellness.

As a mother to three beautiful children – Mackenzie, Blake, and Scott – Heather understands the importance of nurturing not only physical but also emotional well-being in children which is why she teaches a free mindfulness for kids program twice a year. Heather and her family lead a deeply holistic and eco-friendly lifestyle. They are committed to mindful living, which includes being exceptionally conscious of what goes into their bodies. Heather understands the direct link between food, chemicals, additives, and overall well-being. She prioritizes wholesome, organic, biodynamic natural foods and avoids additives like artificial dyes, preservatives, aligning with her dedication to holistic wellness.

Heather has shared her life with her husband Steven since 2008. Both graduated from Oxford High School, and they share a love for fishing along the Au Sable River in their Stealthcraft. Steven is an Engineer and an avid MTB racer. Heather, along with their children can often be found cheering him on at local mountain bike (MTB) races throughout the year.

Heather is excited to share her expertise in mindfulness, nutrition, and physical activity programs with the Wild + Rooted community. One of her most cherished programs is Cooking with Kids, a family-based nutrition program. She believes that when families learn together, they’re more likely to embrace healthy behaviors and succeed collectively. Heather envisions Wild + Rooted as a cornerstone of health and wellness in the community, evolving into a comprehensive wellness center. She hosts open breastfeeding support hours every Tuesday from 10 am to 12 pm, providing a welcoming space for new moms and expectant mothers to receive free breastfeeding support while enjoying a comforting cup of tea.

With a deep commitment to ancestral herbal practices, holistic well-being, and her ongoing education, Heather is dedicated to empowering individuals and families to lead healthier lives and reconnect with the wisdom of our ancestors.

Jennifer Feyen

Licensed Respiratory Therapist
Herbalist in Training

Jennifer Feyen is a dedicated healthcare professional with a diverse background that enriches her role as a licensed Respiratory Therapist and her ongoing journey into herbalism. Her experiences have shaped her commitment to holistic well-being and a passion for helping others achieve optimal health.

Jennifer’s unique blend of medical expertise, herbalism, and commitment to holistic living make her a valuable member of our team. Her diverse experiences allow her to provide well-rounded guidance to our customers on their paths to wellness.

Jennifer’s roots are in Rochester, MI, and she now resides in Oxford. Beyond her professional pursuits, she is a martial arts enthusiast, practicing South Korean Tang Soo Do Moo Do Quan. Her passion for martial arts reflects her dedication to discipline and personal growth.

Jennifer is also deeply connected to the land and practices homesteading, focusing on gardening, home food preservation, nutrition, and cooking. She places a strong emphasis on anti-inflammatory eating and aligning her diet with the seasons of the region in which she lives.

service + education

Jennifer has 12 years of service in two branches of the military, the Navy and the Army. She served as a corpsman and combat medic, with one year spent in the Iraq war from 2003 to 2004 under the 101st Airborne Assault Division in Mosul, Iraq. Her time in the military instilled qualities such as discipline and resilience.

Following her military service, Jennifer transitioned to a career in healthcare, becoming a licensed respiratory therapist in 2005. She specializes in critical care, trauma, pulmonary function testing, and sleep medicine. Her expertise in these critical areas has made her an invaluable healthcare professional.

Jennifer’s commitment to holistic well-being led her to pursue further studies in herbalism. She is currently attending the David Winston program of herbalism, working towards becoming a certified herbalist. Her training in herbalism complements her medical background, providing a holistic approach to wellness.

Shawna

Wellness Advisor, Entrepreneur

Shawna has been an integral part of the Simple Organics team since 2014, bringing a wealth of knowledge and passion to her role as a Wellness Advisor. Her journey into holistic living began in 2012 when she first walked through the doors of Simple Organics. It was here that she discovered her true calling.

Shawna’s commitment to holistic well-being and her warm, welcoming demeanor make her an invaluable resource for our customers. Whether you’re seeking advice on natural remedies, aromatherapy, or holistic living, Shawna is here to guide you on your wellness journey.

When she’s not at the store, Shawna leads a dynamic life. She’s a dedicated mother, raising two remarkable teenagers. Shawna also lends a hand in her husband’s thriving greenhouse business, where they nurture beautiful plants. In her spare time, she indulges her creative side by experimenting with aromatherapy and crafting unique, handcrafted soaps. Her passion for essential oils and their benefits shines through in her hobby soap business Breutanicals.

Maggie shares her life with her husband, and their journey together has spanned 11 beautiful years. Their family is completed by a vibrant and spirited 5-year-old son, who radiates light and joy into their lives. For Maggie, staying connected to the simplicity of life remains a top priority, not just for herself but for her family as well.

In 2001, Maggie took a significant step towards her passion by graduating with a massage therapy license. Her dedication was clear: she aimed to help people nourish, care for, and become advocates for their bodies from the inside out. For six years, she dedicated herself to the art of bodywork, fostering wellness in those she touched.

In 2007, Maggie embarked on a different career path, but her love for nourishing people and promoting wellness never waned. She found herself drawn to share her knowledge and lifestyle choices with friends, family, and her community. To her, the greatest joy is derived from giving wholeheartedly to those around her, a principle she lives by each day.

When she’s not in her kitchen, passionately crafting nourishing meals, you’ll find Maggie tending to a home filled with flourishing plants or outdoors, actively composting and cultivating a connection with the earth. These practices reflect her dedication to a holistic and sustainable way of living.

Abbi

Holistic Health Practioner, Village Herbalist, Forager

Abbi is a Holistic Health Practitioner, Village Herbalist, and Forager whose passion is rooted in seasonal living, re-claimimg traditional skills being lost to modern society, and community sufficiency. When introduced to Ayurveda in 2014, it organically took over her life and inspired the wellness training that she underwent over the span of what would be a near decade. When she is not educating her community on the amazing benefits of plants & fungi, she is likely taking her cats for a walk or in her silversmithing studio making nature inspired jewelry.
